[Bookplate for John Jenkins D.D.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a white lion passant reguardant with black spots standing on the top portion of a stone castle tower. The tower sits on a crest-wreath. The shield is divided per cross. Around the shield is a curling border with leafy adornments and spirals on the sides. The border is thicker on the left, right, and bottom portion. The border does not cover the entire shield ; there are gaps at the top left and right corners and at the center of the base. The top left and bottom right sections of the shield are identical. They have a black and white striped background and are charged with a white chevron decorated with black dots. They are also charged with three white fleur-de-lis, two over one around the chevron. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are also identical. They have a white background with black dots and are charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with leafy ends that match the shield’s decorative border. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed underneath the motto in thin, sentence-case, black, cursive font. 22. [Bookplate for Joint Board of Theological Colleges] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate banned frame with leaf sprigs houses the text. At the bottom of the frame, the letters MTD are incorporated amid a sprig. The outside of the frame is decorated with a repeating leaf pattern. The corners of the frame are four shields. The top left tablet shield is dotted (gold) and charged with an undecipherable center object. An open book sits atop the shield. The top right tablet shield is horizontally lined (azure) and charged with a downward facing bird (dove) at the chief and an open book at the base. A tree sits atop the shield. The bottom left Norman pointed shield is horizontally lined (azure) with a cross (argent). It is charged with an open book with writing over the center of the cross. A coronet sits atop the shield. The bottom right spade shield is blank (argent) and is charged with an anchor. A mitre sits atop the shield. 23. [Bookplate for Joseph Edgar Guimont by Chalifour Ltée Journal “Le Nord”] Blue ink on cream paper. Capitalized, block, sans-serif letters are printed at the top of the bookplate. Below the text is gothic font in sentence case with a thin blue line framing it atop and below. In the center of the bookplate is an image of a right hand reaching out of a cloud to pour oil into an oil lamp with the flame burning. The lamp is elaborately decorated with floral and curlicue embellishments. The lamp sits atop a closed book with the spine facing out. The cloud extends behind the lamp and book as well. A thin blue line separates the image from sentence-case serif font and another thin blue line is below that text. Below the line is thin italicized font and a dotted line. At the bottom of the bookplate is a thin blue line directly above some smaller, sentence-case serif blue font. 24. [Bookplate for Joseph-Olivier Archambault] In black ink on yellow paper. A decorative border with integrated flowers and ornamentation in corners surrounds the text. 25. [Bookplate for Kennedy McIlwraith] Black ink on white paper. The image depicts the main entrance to University College at the University of Toronto. 26. [Bookplate for Laurence A. Waldron by Waller] In red ink. This bookplate displays a classical theme. A neoclassical urn, draped with a laurel garland serves as the back-drop for the escutcheon. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with three bull's heads caboshed, situated two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger sejant. This component is encircled by the originator's Latin motto. The urn is set upon a pedestal with an oval background, framed by a garland. At the base, between the oval background and laurel garland frame, appears the name and location of the creator. 27. [Bookplate for Lorne A. Pierce by Marjorie Sankey] Printed in black ink on thick yellow/brown paper with visible chain and laid lines. The facade of a building entrance is supported and surrounded by a large tree. The owner's name appears in the otherwise blank doorway and two horizontal strips on the surrounding columns appear to be blacked out by hand. 28. [Bookplate for McIntosh Art Gallery by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream paper. White ivy border over stippled black background. Names of John Gordon McIntosh and Wilhelmina Morris McIntosh inscribed on facing pages of book, behind which is a lit torch whose rays span out from the center of the plate. The text of the plate is on a scroll which is woven around a lyre, a symbol of harmony. 29. [Bookplate for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce by Avis Selina Fyshe] The image border, black ink on white paper, depicts the variety of topics of children's literature included in the library: travel, myths, fairy-tales, nature, crafts, sport, pets, legend, music, adventure, history, and science. Each subject is displayed with a representative image, including, train, plane, covered-wagon, trumpeter, knight, dragon, dog, rabbit, sailing boats, people, ostrich, monkey, princess and pegasus. 30. [Bookplate for Susie Maria Denton Massey] The image of a large house sitting above a wooded riverbank is possibly that of Dentonia Park Farm, the estate and working farm that Hart Massey built for his wife Susie in 1889. Massey's name is flanked by two lions bearing shields. 31. [Bookplate for Thomas B. Greening] Printed in black ink on cream paper. In the centre of the image, a heraldic shield is depicted. The shield is decorated by two thick intersecting lines with reversed scalloped edges, forming a cross shape. The lines are incised with a pattern of thin, close-set vertical lines and contrast against a solid background. Below the shield, a banner with chevron-ed edges contains the phrase ‘A TOUTE FORCE.’ Above the shield, the head and neck of a horse is shown in profile, facing left, with its mouth open and mane flowing. 32. [Bookplate for William C. Hawes by Alfred Adlard] In black ink on white paper a large building is shown surrounded by a fence, smaller buildings, and trees. 33. [Bookplate] In black ink. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with a mullet, pierced, azure (blue), at the fess point, surrounded by three cross crosslets, fitched, gules (red), two over one. The shield itself is constructed from rococo scrolls and is surrounded by elaborate vegetative mantling, finishing in a pair of tassels. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, charged with a straight wreath, and a cubit arm, clutching a cross crosslet fitchy. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originators Latin motto. 34. [Bookplate] The text of the bookplate is surrounded by an elaborate border decorated with various religious figures and themes. Angels kneel on either side of the upper corners and face inwards towards a man holding a book and looking outwards from an arch. The sides are decorated with ornate columns, at the bottom of which are crosses and a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Both the top and bottom portions of the border are decorated with stylized curls. The word 'Catholic' is printed in a bold font, and 'Circulating Library' is in a curly stylized Gothic font. The rules of the library are divided from the rest of the text by bars at the top and bottom, and there is a hand symbol pointing to the library's hours of operation at the bottom of the bookplate. The price of the library subscription is given in shillings, dating this to the era of the Canadian pound which was in use until currency decimalization came into force in 1858. 35. [Bookplate] A stylized floral border surrounds the text, which is written in several different fonts and is found in the middle of the bookplate. The word 'Catholic' is written in a curly font with the words 'Circulating Library' printed in Gothic below. The book number is printed underneath, and there is a line dividing the upper part of the text from the middle, which lists the library rules. Below the library rules is another line, and below this is a hand symbol which points to further information on the library hours. The cost of subscription is given in cents, dating this bookplate after 1858, the year in which currency decimalization came into force in Canada. 36. [Bookplate] Five lines of text enclosed within a double border of one thick and one thin line. The words 'Cote St. Antoine' are written in a slightly curled font, and the words 'Methodist S.S. Library' are in bold. There is a space for the number of the book to be written in by hand. The bookplate also includes the terms of borrowing. 37. [Bookseller's Tickets for Charles-Odilon Beauchemin] 1) In orange ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of an orange and white border surrounding white text on an orange field. 2) In red-orange ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a red-orange and white border surrounding white text on a red-orange field. 3) In black ink on green paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black link border surrounding black text. 4) In black ink on green paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black decorative border surrounding black text. 5) In black ink on yellow paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black border in the likeness of an open book surrounding black text on the open spread of the book. 6) In black ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black decorative border with maple leaves in the four corners, surrounding an oval border containing the booksellers' name, surrounding the booksellers' address on an illustration of a scroll at the center. 7) The gold metallic, embossed booksellers' ticket consists of a maple leaf surrounded by laurel branches at the center of the ticket.
